Hope for Hossana
This is a multi-faceted, community-based project with a holistic approach to supporting families. Services will eventually include an elementary school for up to 400 children, a pediatric clinic and a women’s health facility. This project will be completed in phases, beginning with the elementary school. Phase I of the school opened in September 2009. Two hundred students are now attending school, some for the first time in their lives. Most of these children come from families living in severe poverty and might never have the opportunity for a quality education without the support of CHSFS. In addition to classrooms, the school features clean, drinkable water, recreational area, a meal program and a library. Providing an education is only one aspect of the support project which also includes a small business development program and a community health initiative designed to equip families with healthy living information such as hygiene, nutrition and HIV prevention.

Learn about a family in Hossana through Day in the Life
Ottoro Primary School
Located in the southern region, the school has actively supported the people of Ottoro since 2006. The first step was to rent small buildings in the town to provide modest space to hold classes for nearly 100 children. Since then a clean water source has been developed, electricity has been run, latrines constructed and a new school facility erected. The school is now providing a quality education for 488 students (3,000 applied for admission) who otherwise would have no educational opportunity. Because all of the families in this area are poor, there is no opportunity for collecting any fees. Therefore, it is our desire to provide sufficient funding for all students to attend at no cost. In addition to an education, students receive school supplies. We are hopeful a new lunch program will be added soon depending on funding availability.

AHOPE - Ethiopia
AHOPE operates the Child Development Center/Community Outreach Program that provides services to enable a family to keep its children who are HIV+ at home. The first center is located in an impoverished neighborhood of Addis Ababa. It has the capacity to assist 100 children and their guardians. The children are provided with food, clothing, psycho-social support and schooling. There is an in-house preschool and the older children are provided with school fees, uniforms, books, etc. Medical care is provided, including anti-retroviral therapy as needed. The guardians of the children receive family training in nutrition, hygiene and care of HIV infected persons. AHOPE Ethiopia also operates two children's homes exclusively for the care of children infected with HIV, with a capacity of about 100 children total.
